Different tyle of fillings
The interior of the insulated jacket is insulated with paddings. One common type of padding is cotton, among which ball cotton, imitation silk cotton and soft cotton are common filling materials. These padded jackets are relatively thick, come in a variety of styles, are not easily deformed, and are easy to clean. Another type of insulation is down, and the jacket filled with down is called down jacket. Down jackets use goose down or duck down as padding. Down is thin, warm, and not easily deformed, but the price is a lot higher than cotton. Goose down generally provides better warmth than duck down, but is also more expensive.
Different fill levels
Padded coats generally is less puffy comparing with down jackets. Filling level is an important indicator of thermal insulation quality. Currently, man-made fibers cannot compete with down, Although there are the many cutting edge artifical insulations such as Primaloft and 3M Thinsulate, and the performance of man-made fibers has improved a lot, there is still a big gap between it and real down. The down jacket has a higher loft, which means that a larger volume of air layer can be fixed for heat preservation and insulation, so the thermal insulation performance will be better. Often times, a jacket needs to be insulated about 400 grams of fake down, while insulation of 300 grams of real down can achieve the same puffy feeling.
Under the premise of the same insulation performance between padded jacket and down jacket, the down jacket is lighter, and takes up less space, while padded jacket takes up more space.
Warmth retention in wet conditions
After the padded coat is wetted by snow, it can still retain a certain degree of warmth and dry quickly. Down jackets are difficult to dry completely when wet and takes longer to dry.
Different cleaning methods
Cleaning padded jacket is easy, while there are many factors and details to consider when cleaning down jackets. Generally, machine washing is not recommended for down jackets. If machine washed, it may destroy the overall aesthetic effect of the down jacket, and the warmth retention performance will be reduced after washing. The biggest feature of padded jacket is that you don't have to worry too much about cleaning. Whether it is hand washing or machine washing, it has little impact on the performance of padded jackets.

Discussion
After have an inspiration from the latest clothing trend, the designer begins to discuss the style, color, and fabrics of each part of the down jacket, etc., and draws design inspiration from the latest trending styles. This session only discusses the general style, color, and fabric. The specific details still need to be completed in the hand-drawing process.
Hand-draw renderings
Hand-drawing is the step of designing and drawing the detailed outline based on the general plan discussed. Complete the outline of the entire garment. This step is very critical, as designers not only should look at the pattern of the jacket, but also should pay attention to the design of details, such as collars, pockets, waists, cuffs and others.
Pattern Making

Typesetting

Which is better, duck down or goose down?
Goose down is a higher-end fill material because it is lighter, softer, and provides better warmth. This is because goose down has larger feathers, which provide better insulation, however, duck down is not a bad choice, especially in terms of price, being cheaper than goose down. If you're looking for top-notch warmth and lightness, goose down may be a better choice. But if you consider cost-effectiveness, duck down is also a good option.
Down jackets or padded jackets?
If your products are trying to keep buyers warm in extremely cold environments, or they need a easy-carrying jacket, a down jacket may be a better choice. But if you are looking for a more affordable jacket, or if you live in an area where the winter is not particularly cold, choosing a padded jacket such as synthetic padding is more appropriate.
How much is the cost difference between short down jackets and long down jackets?
The cost difference between long down jackets and short down jackets mainly comes from several aspects: the fabrics, accessories used, CMT cost, and weight of insulation. Generally, long down jackets may cost a lot more than short down jackets because they use more fabric and heavier insulation. But this is also affected by the complexity of the design and the grade of materials used. For example, if a long down jacket is made of very low quality fabric and 50/50 grey duck down, its price may still be lower than a short down jacket which features top tier fabric and insulation material.
What is the filling power (FP) level of down jackets?
The fill power of a down jacket is an important indicator of the thermal insulation performance and the quality of down. Fill power refers to how many cubic inches of space a certain weight (usually one ounce, about 28.35 grams) of down can fill without external force. The higher the fill power value, the stronger the down's ability to expand and capture more air, thereby providing better thermal insulation performance. Normally a down jacket has filling power between 500-700. In rare cases, a very top notch down jacket can reach 900+ FP.
How to choose the filling power when making down jacket?
If the down jackets are designed for the city, or in relatively less cold environments, a down jacket with a fill power of 500-600 is enough. If you sell them for a very cold environment and need a better thermal insulation performance, you should choose a down jacket with a fill power of 700+. High-fill down jackets are not only warm but also lightweight, making them easy to carry and store. It may feel strange that with higher filling power, the jacket can be lighter. This is becasue higher quality down has better warm keeping performance while is lighter.
How to choose the fabric of down jackets?
For down jackets, the generally recommended fabric density range is from 20D to 40D. Fabrics in this range can provide good durability and appropriate warmth while maintaining the lightweight nature of down jackets. For example: 20D: Very thin and suitable for less cold environments or as a mid-layer. 30D: Medium thickness, provides good durability and warmth, suitable for most climate conditions. 40D+: Thicker fabric, suitable for cold weather or outdoor activities. There exists a certain special down jacket that features super thin fabric yarn such as 10D and 15D fabric. This kind of fabric can be seen through and the down inside will form an unique pattern.
Is it must have a gall blader when manufacturing down jacket?
Gall blader is a lining material often used to prevent down from leaking out of the fabric. Nowadays, most of the down jackets require gall blader to prevent down from leaking. For normal down jackets, the short answer is yes, we must have a gall blader. There exist one special case where the down jacket does not use gall blader, that is, the density of the fabric is high enough that can stop the down from leaking. Meanwhile, the down must also be very high quality and the feather needs to be big enough (such as 95/5 white goose down). Such jacket does not have problem of down leaking without gall blader.
How to make a gall-free down-proof down jacket?
Fabric selection: Choose fabrics with high density and have special treatment. These fabrics can prevent down from leaking and have certain waterproof and windproof functions.
Sewing thread selection: Use silicone oil-treated sewing thread, which can reduce friction with the fabric and prevent the needle eye from becoming larger, thereby reducing the down leaking.
Sewing techniques: During the sewing process, special sewing techniques are used, such as double-thread stitching, dense stitching, etc., enhancing the sealing of the stitching parts and prevent down from escaping.
Down filling process: In the absence of gallbladder, the insulation process of down needs to be more precise to ensure that the down is evenly distributed and does not move easily. Down-filled patterns are usually divided into multiple small compartments, and each compartment is filled with exactly the right amount of down.
Detail processing: After various parts of the garment are made, detailed processing is performed, such as adding extra coverings to zippers and seams to further prevent down from leaking.
The difference between down anti-drilling and down proof?
Down anti-drilling and downproof are both after-treatment of fabrics. The difference between the two is:
Down Anti-Drilling:
The density of the anti-drilling fabric is higher and the fiber gaps are smaller, which can effectively prevent the tiny down from drilling out.
Typically used in high-end down jackets as it provides better warmth and durability.
The anti-strip fabric may be slightly thicker, which may also increase the weight of the down jacket.
Downproof:
Although downproof fabric can also prevent down from escaping, its density may not be as high as down anti-drilling fabric.
Suitable for down jackets that do not have particularly high downproof requirements, or as a supplementary material for the inner layer of down jackets.
